Introducing SpaceBox – Spatial Audio Control for MacOS

SpaceBox is a macOS application built for sound engineers and designers working in theatres and live events. It offers a practical and innovative way to manage spatial audio across distributed speaker systems, allowing you to recreate your venue’s layout on a virtual canvas with ease. Place inputs on the canvas and route them to your speakers based on their position.

Many Platforms, One Interface

SpaceBox’s unified canvas interface lets you control QLab directly or choose from a growing roster of supported mixing desks—including Yamaha, Digico, and more — all from one familiar workspace. Simply map your speaker layout on the virtual stage, drop inputs onto the canvas, and SpaceBox instantly calculates send levels to each output based on proximity, faithfully mirroring your venue’s geometry. This real-time control over signal levels makes it effortless to place sounds anywhere or animate them live, without the need for costly spatial audio hardware.

For D&B Soundscape users, SpaceBox connects directly to the DS100 mix engine, unlocking grouped input/output control, instant positional snapshot recall, and dynamic path playback that R1 lacks. Running side-by-side with the native R1 interface, SpaceBox’s unified canvas delivers a more intuitive, flexible workflow for managing spatial audio in even the most complex environments.

Key Features

  • Real-World Canvas Layout
SpaceBox operates on a true-to-scale virtual canvas, where each grid unit represents one metre in the real world. This allows you to accurately recreate your venue’s layout, ensuring your design translates seamlessly to the physical space. Whether working from memory or a detailed plan, you can place speakers and sound objects precisely where they belong. For added clarity, SpaceBox supports background image integration, enabling you to overlay technical drawings or architectural plans directly onto the canvas for perfect alignment.

  • Flexible Canvas Orientation
The canvas orientation and zero point are fully configurable, allowing you to match the virtual representation to the operator’s point of view. Whether your mix position is at the rear of the venue or to one side, you can rotate and re-centre the canvas accordingly. This is especially valuable in Soundscape mode, where orientation is critical for accurate spatial representation. Notably, this flexibility goes beyond what tools like d&b R1 currently offer, providing a clear advantage in complex setups.

  • Path Cues and Snapshots
SpaceBox provides tools to manage dynamic movements and layout states with ease. Use Path Cues to automate the movement of objects across your canvas, bringing motion and transition to your sound design. Snapshots allow you to quickly store and recall complete layout states, making it straightforward to return to previous configurations or to build structured show sequences. Updates are instant, giving you full control over spatial positioning during rehearsals and live performances.

  • QLab Mode
SpaceBox’s QLab Mode lets you control each I/O’s input and output crosspoints directly from the canvas. Perfect for placing sounds onstage or animating them along defined paths and cue points. When you’re happy with your motion, generate QLab-compatible fade cues with a single click—export them into QLab and run your show fades independently, without needing SpaceBox open.

  • Groups
For efficient workflow, SpaceBox lets you group sound objects or outputs together. Once grouped, these elements can be selected and controlled as a single unit, streamlining your adjustments across multiple loudspeakers or inputs. This is particularly useful when handling complex arrays or clustered sound objects, helping you maintain consistency across your system without repetitive actions.

  • Mixer View

The Mixer View provides fine-grained control over the interaction between each sound object and every speaker in your system. This interface allows you to tailor the contribution of individual sound sources to specific outputs, offering a level of detailed adjustment normally reserved for large-format mixing consoles. Whether you need to refine coverage in a specific area or create deliberate imbalances for creative effect, the Mixer View ensures precise, intuitive control.

A Practical and Flexible Solution

SpaceBox is designed to make spatial audio accessible, practical, and efficient for a broad range of users. Whether you're working with conventional loudspeaker systems or advanced spatial audio platforms, it offers a clear, intuitive environment for building and controlling complex soundscapes. For users without access to specialist hardware, SpaceBox opens the door to spatial audio design, providing tools to experiment with positioning and movement without the need for costly processors or dedicated systems.

For those operating within advanced environments such as D&B Soundscape, SpaceBox extends the possibilities further. It offers a more flexible and streamlined interface than traditional control platforms, reducing setup complexity while retaining precise control. SpaceBox empowers sound designers and engineers alike to build creative spatial systems and manage them with clarity, offering a bridge between design and execution, and placing control firmly in the hands of the user.
